Recent natural disasters are often closely linked to the impacts of global climate change. As the Earth’s temperature increases, various extreme natural phenomena occur more frequently. In recent years, we have witnessed various disasters, such as forest fires that hit Australia and California, flash floods in Europe, and tropical storms that have become stronger and more frequent. Climate change causes an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather. For example, warmer oceans can increase evaporation, resulting in more moisture in the atmosphere. This phenomenon contributes to heavy rains that can cause severe flooding. In addition, rising temperatures have implications for melting polar ice which can raise sea levels, threatening coastal areas in various countries. Forest fires, one of the most worrying impacts of climate change, are often caused by a combination of high temperatures and low humidity. These fires not only destroy ecosystems but also release carbon dioxide which further contributes to the greenhouse effect. In some cases, forest fires in one area can trigger dust storms that spread to other areas. Floods caused by extreme rainfall can damage infrastructure, pollute water sources and threaten public health. In Europe, flash floods that occurred in 2021 caused significant economic losses, destroying homes and transport infrastructure. As many as 200 people lost their lives as a result of this disaster, showing how serious the impact of climate change is. Looking from a social and economic perspective, natural disasters due to climate change can exacerbate social injustice. Communities with limited resources are often hardest hit, as they do not have the capacity to adapt or recover after a disaster. Food availability is also threatened, due to changes in climate patterns which can affect agricultural yields. Better early warning and disaster management systems are essential in dealing with this threat. The use of technology, such as satellites and predictive models, can help countries mitigate the impact of disasters. In addition, public education about the risks of climate change must also be improved, so that they can anticipate and respond better. It is important to remember that mitigation measures against climate change, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, are urgently needed. Renewable energy and sustainable agricultural practices can be a solution to slowing the rate of climate change. Countries need to work together in global efforts to achieve agreed emissions reduction targets, such as those in the Paris Agreement. In the face of increasingly frequent natural disasters, cross-sector collaboration, from government, the private sector, to civil society, becomes very crucial. Further research and technological innovation are also needed to develop more effective adaptation mechanisms to build community resilience to natural disasters caused by climate change. This collective effort will not only protect the environment, but also human life.
